Enter the Nightbird

Just when you thought it was safe to return to the usual idiocy dwelling
on N-S, here comes another review of the fantastic show we all watched repeatedly
as children, teenagers, and dirty old perverted men who frequently fondle
their privates while watching nursery school children play Duck Duck
Goose. What more could you want?
PLOT SUMMARY
Dr. Fujiyama, man recently voted "World's Most Stereotypical Asian Male"
invents a ninja robot for absolutely no good reason. As everyone
on Earth would expect, Megatron shows up three seconds later to steal it,
reprogram it, and sick it on the Autobots in order to destroy them and
steal some silly chip that is in no way explained. A jealous Starscream
puts her out of commission, and the Autobots recapture her and deliver
her back to Dr. Fujiyama who decides that she must never be used again,
so he promptly puts her in a broom closet rather than destroying her.
GREAT LINES
"Megatron... you fiend!" - Optimus delivering the world's most
corny line while Starscream watches on TV (see, even the Transformers like
watching Transformers).
PLOT PROBLEMS
-
The entire premise of this episode is so completely moronic I don't even
know where to begin. First off, Fujiyama creates a female ninja robot.
Exactly what makes a robot either "female" or "ninja?" Second, he
says she's not made to assassinate or do battle. Why make a ninja
then? And why load it with weapons in every single nook and cranny?
Finally, though every character (save Megatron) makes reference to how
primitive Nightbird is, she can single handedly wipe out virtually all
of the Autobots at once--something even the mighty Decepticons could never
do.
-
This may be a small point, but the episode (and this review for that matter)
continually refer to Nightbird as a "robot" when she should be called an
"android."
-
As always, Megatron can't do a damn thing without the help of us miserable,
little, weak, worthless humans.
-
Megatron refers to his new base as temporary. Why even build the
base? They already have one. And if it's temporary, why go
through the trouble of carving and painting a gigantic Decepticon symbol?
-
When Nightbird is first unveiled, Optimus has to ask Spike what a ninja
is. Then, after being thoroughly beaten silly by her, he suddenly knows
an awful lot about ninjas and their ways.
-
While tracking Nightbird, Hound activates his "infra-red" which works and
sounds suspiciously like RADAR, but of course that doesn't sound as cool.
-
At the end, Optimus states that Nightbird was "de-programmed" to remove
all of Bombshell's mind control. Why then does the episode end with
a close up of her looking evil? Luckily, she never turns up ever
again anyway.
CHANGED PREMISES
-
Rumble's pile drivers are square instead of round.
-
The Autobots suddenly have a security camera at the entrance to their headquarters
(but never will again) solely for the purpose of Nightbird being able to
sneak past it.
-
Optimus Prime has a little microphone that pops out when communicating
with the base. In the past, he'd just talk and somehow his image
would show up even though there was no camera there.
-
Megatron frees Nightbird by using his "antimatter blaster." He must
have been working a bit on that, because in "Roll
for It" he was unable to create antimatter (and of course had to steal
it from the lowly, useless humans).
ANIMATION FLUBS
-
While guarding Nightbird, Jazz, who's way off in the distance, is about
a head taller than Prime.
-
While attacking the unveiling of Nightbird, Megatron says he brings "lethal
greetings" and fires at (but misses) Optimus Prime. The next shot
shows that he was roughly one foot away. More target practice must
be in order.
-
The next sequence has Brawn miss Soundwave from about four feet away.
-
Eventually Megatron is able to hit Optimus, and he yelps in pain.
Well, someone yelps anyway (someone sounding like Mirage), but it sure
ain't Optimus.
-
Skywarp lifts up the dome ceiling to this place (wherever it may be) so
the Decepticons can fly off with Nightbird. Then he lets it go and
some how it falls into the theater upside down.
-
Obviously, and this is getting old to type, every Optimus transformation
came from the earlier episode that no one even liked in the first place.
-
Optimus calls Fujiyama to apologize for not being able to save Nightbird
(where Fujiyama is remains a mystery since he was at the same place as
Optimus). During this call, Optimus is still inside the Superdome.
Then he "hangs up" and turns around. Suddenly he's outside the MegaDomePlex.
-
Nightbird attacks the Autobots and we go to break. Coming back, Bluestreak's
suddenly there, right in front.
-
And of course, both Hound and Brawn magically appear during the battle
as well.
-
After getting the totally nonsensical chip away from Nightbird, Optimus
grabs it in one shot, then the very next shot has it disappearing, presumably
to the same "invisible land of make believe" that his trailer stays in
until he transforms.
Well, Megatron failed and Nightbird was deactivated and deprogrammed...
or was she? And how the hell is a robot a "she" anyway? Perhaps
these questions will be answered in the next installment, "City of Steel."
