The Immobilizer

Yes, I know.  You are thrilled beyond expression that it's time to once again revisit the classy and timeless world of the struggle between good and totally incompetent evil that is The Transformers.  What I don't know is what you could have possibly been doing to pass the time between my last review and this one.  Well, no time for that, let's get going.

PLOT SUMMARY

Wheeljack decides to build an Immobilizer which will "finish the Decepticons forever," even though every Autobots has about a thousand missiles and lasers on them which could also do the same thing.  During a demonstration, Wheeljack is accidentally frozen and Megatron shows up to steal the Immobilizer.  He then starts using it to immobilize all of the slow-selling Autobots.  Unfortunately, some girl named Carly shows up and reverses the effects of the Immobilizer, and Ironhide destroys it.

GREAT LINES

"I take that back... ow!" - Brawn, after saying that the frozen water was no match for his fist and finding out that it was.

GREAT SCENES

The scene where the Decepticons fall through the frozen water as it becomes liquid again is pretty funny.

PLOT PROBLEMS

  • Wheeljack decides to test the Immobilizer on a hologram of Lazerbeak at first.  I can't understand how this device would affect a holographic image.
  • A bungled attack by Ironhide results in the "polarizer" on the Immobilizer breaking.  Wheeljack asks Bumblebee and Spike to "run into town" and get another.  From where, and with what money?  I guess they're going to Fast Frankie's Free Super Advanced Devices That Don't Really Exist Emporium.
  • After getting the aforementioned device, Bumblebee and Spike get pulled over by a policeman who has a cutsie-patootsie scene where he's astonished to learn of the Autobots.  What the hell rock has this clown been living under that he hasn't heard of them yet?
  • Ironhide feels that he's too old to be useful so he retires.  Optimus Prime lets him go without a single bit of resistance.  Guess he got sick of doing both voices.
  • Then, two seconds after retiring and walking off, Ironhide's back in the control room helping Wheeljack recover.
  • Not really a mistake, but the video arcade Spike and Bumblebee visit has some really great games:  "Oh!," "Hot!," "SFX," "Chu!!," and of course everyone's favorite... "Pan!"

CHANGED PREMISES

  • Hound has a clear front (looking suspiciously like Ironhide's chest) that he uses to project his holograms.
  • Trailbreaker's force field emits from his chest rather than the crooked doodad on his shoulder.
  • Starscream yells out "a Decepticon never retreats!" at one point, thereby proving that he hasn't seen a single one of every other episode up until this point (and in fact he would retreat twice in just this episode).
  • Lazerbeak flies up from the Decepticon base through the water rather than using that elevator device the Decepticons always use (and Lazerbeak would use a few moments later).
  • Ironhide's suddenly got some rocket backpack.  Before it was a missile launcher.

ANIMATION FLUBS

  • Cliffjumper mouths Gears's line "what does it instantly immobilize?"
  • When Bumblebee returns to base with the "polarizer," he gets pulled over by a policeman.  He is in dense traffic until pulling over, then there's not a car in sight.
  • During this scene with the policeman, the One Way signs overhead continually change directions.
  • When Wheeljack screws on the new "polarizer," his hand seems to pass through it rather than turn it.
  • In a move that's making me want to just copy and paste this shit every damn time, Optimus Prime's transformations all come from some early episode that I'm starting to wish was never made.
  • Megatron transforms to shoot Ironhide at one point sans any transformation sound.
  • After retiring, Ironhide is prominently seen rolling out with the Autobots only to be back at base two seconds later because he retired.
Well, what could possibly be the worst of Megatron's plans to date failed again, this time due to the quick thinking of one Carly.  And at the end she even drives off with Spike for a "chocolate soda," which I think we all know is code for "one night stand in a cheap motel."  We'll see if that's true next time in "Enter the Nightbird."
