Heavy Metal War

Yes friends, internet stalkers, and insane paranoid lunatics alike, it's time once again to check out the next zany, feature packed episode of The Transformers, recently nominated for the prestigious "Cartoon Monkey" award.  I'm not entirely sure what that means, but it sounds kind of funny anyway.

PLOT SUMMARY

Tired of always losing like a sissy nancy boy, Megatron builds himself some reinforcements:  the Constructicons.  They steal some energy collecting hoosamascooch and use it to make a power transfer whatsamahoosits.  This gives Megatron all the powers of the Decepticons, making him pretty much the same only 400 times more incompetent.  He then challenges Optimus Prime to a fight and beats the pants off him, forcing Prime to oust himself and the Autobots into space forever like the wusses they are.  But a plucky young Chip Chase unearths Megatron's trickery and the Autobots open up a can of Energon Whoop Ass, beating the piss out of the Decepticons once and for all... or is it?

GREAT LINES

"Maybe it would if I knew what you were talking about" - Ironhide to Chip Chase, showing that no one can ever keep up to speed with the greatest Transformers character ever.

GREAT SCENES

There's a cute scene where Ravage snuggles up to Soundwave and Soundwave actually pets Ravage.  It kind of reminded me of my cat and myself except that Ravage didn't start trying to draw blood with his razor sharp fangs.

PLOT PROBLEMS

  • When the Constructicons steal the energy devices, they load them into Long Haul.  Then when he transforms, they just disappear.  Luckily they're back when he turns back into a dump truck.
  • As always, Megatron builds an elaborate base, a power transfer machine, and even new Decepticons but he needs to steal energy collecting devices from the lowly, stupid, worthless humans.
  • If all that gives the Decepticons their various special powers is the Power Chip Rectifier, why not just build themselves new ones with even greater powers?
  • Several times the point is made that this big battle must be unaided yet no one seems to care that Megatron has his fusion cannon.
  • Several more times it's mentioned that Teletran I can detect Megatron's trickery, yet the Constructicons don't actually try to disable Teletran until well after the fight and it never picks up on anything.
  • With all those super magnificent powers, you can't help but wonder why Megatron doesn't just kill Prime and all the other Autobots.
  • One shot from Prime's rifle can totally disable Devastator?
  • And one shot from Prime's rifle also decimates that super duper powered up Megatron at the end as well.

CHANGED PREMISES

  • Back in "S.O.S. Dinobots," I mentioned how it was a good thing that the Decepticons didn't have the ability to build their own troops.  Apparently I was mistaken because this episode claims they do.  I wonder why they never thought to do that sooner.
  • And exactly when did these Power Chip Rectifiers come into play?  You mean it's not special weapons these guys have but actual internal circuitry that gives them unique abilities?
  • Optimus can suddenly shoot lasers out of his hand.

ANIMATION FLUBS

  • When Megatron flies in to challenge Prime, Ironhide's not in the overhead shot but then suddenly appears in the close up.
  • In typical Autobots fashion, the Autobots that transform and roll for the battle are totally different than the ones who actually arrive.
  • When tunneling under Teletran I, Scrapper calls Scavenger "Scrounge."
  • This isn't really a mistake, and I could even be wrong, but when Scavenger scans for Teletran's presence, it sounds for all the world like he says "Hell, he's right above us!"  Hell?!
  • During the battle, Optimus suddenly gets his rifle out of nowhere (even though he can now just shoot lasers out of his hand).
  • Needing acid to break into the Autobots' headquarters, Scrapper calls to Mixmaster who is nowhere to be found in the overhead shot but then is luckily right next to Scrapper in the close up.
  • Devastator has two separate eyes for all but two shots when he has the solid visor he usually has.

DVD DIFFERENCES

Boy oh boy, the people at Rhino sure had a field day with this one!

  • For once, a difference that actually corrects an error.  When Scrapper is introducing the Constructicons, there's a pan across them as he calls their names.  In the original, this pan was so fast that the names were said well after the character had disappeared off screen.  In the DVD, the pan is slowed to show each character as his name is said.
  • When Megatron explains his latest scheme, Starscream (who even has a line) is recolored like Skywarp.
  • When Cliffjumper fires his super freeze-o-matic ray, he's recolored like Bumblebee.
  • Here's another one that fixed a mistake:  after Wheeljack fires his cannon, he slowly sits up and then says a line.  In the original, his ears glow from the minute he hits the ground.  On the DVD, they only glow while he's speaking.
  • There's a completely different shot of Optimus raising his rifle to fire at Megatron as he approaches.
  • The entire Megatron landing sequence is re-edited, inserting a shot of Cliffjumper (facing the wrong way), and a shot of Megatron hitting the ground from later during the fight scene (he's also colored black in this shot for some reason).
  • After Megatron challenges Prime, there's a pan from Cliffjumper on Prime's right over to Wheeljack on Prime's left.  In the DVD, the pan is gone, just a static shot of Cliffjumper then an obviously "frozen" shot of Wheeljack.
  • The entire power rectifier transfer sequence is re-edited.  Starscream's mouth disappears for much of it, his taking out his chip and putting it in the machine is totally different (and the chip is actually missing), the other Decepticons putting their chips in is a completely different shot, and Megatron's powering up is missing most of the glow surrounding him.
  • When the Constructicons transform to tunnel under Teletran I, they're suddenly outside.
  • During the Autobot transform and roll sequence, Trailbreaker is suddenly outside.
  • When the Autobots arrive at the battle site, Ironhide's transformation is reversed, making him go from van to suddenly being a robot turning into a van to suddenly being a robot.
  • During the battle, Optimus hurls a boulder at Megatron, who teleports away.  Except in the DVD he doesn't disappear, he's still standing right there as the boulder smooshes him.
  • Skywarp then comments on the use of his teleport ability but he's recolored like Starscream.  Interestingly enough, he's colored correctly every other time this shot is used, they only recolored him wrong when he actually spoke.
  • Megatron finishes the battle with a large blast from his fusion cannon.  The pan from him over to a blasted Prime is made all choppy, like they removed several frames of the animation.
  • And finally, as the Constructicons battle the Dinobots, a hole is blasted in the side of the volcano and they're forced out.  Except as they're leaving, the background shows the sky, making it appear that they're being forced in.
This was actually the last episode of the first season, and it ends in such a way that the series could have ended, but of course the public wanted none of that.  They cried out for more, and they got it.  Next time around the block, we'll be looking at "Autobot Spike," the first episode of the second season.
