S.O.S. Dinobots

Yes friends, it's time once again for another wacky look at those kooky
robots in disguise as they battle to save Earth, usually by destroying
everything in their path. "You won't destroy the power plant, Megatron,
because I'll destroy it first!" Well, whatever works, I guess.
PLOT SUMMARY
After investigating some unusual seismic disruptions, the Autobots discover
the fossils of completely intact dinosaurs (just like would really happen).
Rather than cashing in on what would no doubt be a multi-billion dollar
find, they instead use the bones as a guide to build dinosaur robots.
They create the Dinobots: Grimlock (a tyrannosaurus rex), Slag (a
triceratops), and Sludge (a brontosaurus). Unfortunately, much like
real dinosaurs, they're uncontrollable and stupid. They trash Autobot
headquarters, so Optimus Prime orders that they be deactivated permanently.
But, just then Megatron gets an original idea and attacks a power plant
for energy. He nearly defeats the Autobots, but Wheeljack upgrades
the Dinobots' brains and reactivates them. They save the day, and
Optimus welcomes them onto his team.
GREAT LINES
"Hey, not the face, huh? I just had it chromed." - Sunstreaker,
totally unworried about the fact that he's engulfed in flames. It
was hard to pick one great line, Huffer had a lot funny ones as well.
PLOT PROBLEMS
-
I understand that actual dinosaurs had small brains, but why would the
Autobots design the Dinobots that way as well? What, did they want
them to go haywire?
-
Almost immediately after activation, the Dinobots run amuck and trash headquarters.
In typical Autobot fashion, they fight back for a good while before suddenly
remembering Wheeljack's magnetorepulsanucleamega cannon can stop them in
two seconds.
-
After learning that the Dinobots are dangerous and must be deactivated
forever, it's a good thing they just sealed them in a cave and didn't
totally dismantle them like they should have.
-
Spike and Hound go on a little recon mission since Teletran I is down.
Midway through the scene, just out of nowhere, Spike decides to explain
that fact to Hound ("We have to check for Decepticons with Teletran I down").
Shouldn't Hound know this?
-
Again with the "astroseconds." Interestingly, Optimus Prime's
"eight thousand astroseconds" seems to take much, much longer than the
million and billion counts we've heard before.
-
Exactly when did Wheeljack make those new memory pack brain upgrades for
the Dinobots anyway? He was supposed to be fixing Teletran I with
Ratchet.
-
So...what was causing all those unusual earthquakes at the beginning
of the episode?
CHANGED PREMISES
-
Wheeljack's ears are back to glowing orange instead of blue.
-
The Autobot ship is down to only two thrusters now (see "Transport
to Oblivion")
-
The Autobots suddenly have the ability to fly again in this episode.
I guess that they can absolutely never fly unless they really want to.
ANIMATION FLUBS
-
When the Autobots go to investigate the cave with the dinosaur fossils,
Jazz suddenly appears alongside everyone else.
-
Spike takes Hound to a museum. Luckily for only that scene, Hound
is suddenly much smaller than ever before or after so that he can fit through
the doorways.
-
Spike tells Hound to capture holograms of three dinosaur skeletons, but
there's only to in the room (there's no brontosaurus).
-
Ratchet mouths Wheeljack's line "Autobots, meet Dinobots."
-
When the Dinobots are unveiled, Bluestreak has some crazy new voice which
sounds an awful lot like Skyfire. Later in the episode, it's back
to sounding an awful lot like Shaggy.
-
Cliffjumper mouths Optimus Prime's line "but what else can they do?"
-
While running rampant, Grimlock heads to the Control Room (whatever that
is). Instead of walking though, Grimlock decides to sort of hover
above the ground and float toward it.
-
At one point during the Autobot/Dinobot battle, Bumblebee gets overturned.
Ratchet kneels down to set him up straight, and in doing so, his right
leg vanishes.
-
At the power plant, Megatron lands in front of a waterfall, then it's a
rock face in the very next close up.
-
Then, Skywarp lands in the background of the next shot, and in the foreground
a big, yellow boot also lands. None of the Decepticons have anything
even close to this color scheme, so who knows who that's supposed to be.
-
While heading to the plant, Ironhide turns into Ratchet for one scene.
-
When the Autobots attack the power plant in order to save it, Gears gets
knocked out of the sky (since he can fly now) and rams into Bluestreak,
sending them both tumbling. The very next shot shows Bluestreak standing
and firing at Rumble.
-
For one shot and one shot only, Rumble's pile drivers turn red.
-
The Dinobots were deactivated and stored in dino mode. When Wheeljack
goes to reactivate them, they're suddenly in robot mode. I guess
they weren't as deactivated as he thought.
-
While retreating, Skywarp turns into Starscream.
And so it ends with the Dinobots welcomed as a new part of the team.
I must admit, the Dinobots were always my favorite characters. They
were huge, powerful, and virtually indestructible. It's fun to see
them back when they were just big, dumb, violence machines and not the
"lovable goofs" they'd become later on in the series. Next time around,
"Fire on the Mountain." See you then!
