More Than Meets the Eye, part 3

I know you've all been waiting with great anticipation to find out how
this stellar trilogy of episodes finishes, so just relax, there's no need
for alarm, it's here. Breathe your sigh of relief and read on...
PLOT SUMMARY
After breaking free from the caved-in mines, the Decepticons attack
a rocket fuel base, giving them the final amount of energy. They
blast off into space, but Mirage sneaks aboard, sabotages the ship, and
escapes. The ship crashes into the ocean, apparently destroyed.
Or is it?...
GREAT LINES
"Then you'd better get some help, Prime!" - Megatron to Optimus after
Optimus tells him it's just the two of them.
GREAT SCENES
After destroying the Decepticon ship, Mirage floats down to Earth.
The Autobots each do a really cool flip in the air up to a higher peak
of a mountain. It's beautifully animated.
PLOT PROBLEMS
-
I think I could be a pretty good Autobot mechanic. Evidently all
you need to do is ask them if they can transform, and they get all better!
At least, that's what happens with Optimus Prime in this episode, and with
Hound in "part 1."
-
Maybe it's just me, but it's not particularly believable that Sparkplug
could survive the cave-in.
-
This is truly one of the greats: the Autobots cave in the mine and
seal the Decepticons in. Moments later, there is a large explosion,
and the mine blasts open. We then cut to the inside, where the Decepticons
are standing around and Skywarp says, "It worked! We're free, we
can get out!" I love this pathetic plot contrivance. We don't
know what happened or how exactly they escaped, but they did something,
and dammit, it worked!
-
AGAIN with Megatron attacking at sunrise. (see "part
2")
-
This is another silly one: setting aside the fact that it is totally impossible
for the Decepticons to have build such perfect clones of themselves overnight,
the garbage that is left after the Autobots discover the trickery is WAY
too huge to have been part of the clones (I refer mainly to the gargantuan
spring Prowl holds). But that's not even it! Since Megatron
knew the Autobots were all going to be at the phony rocket base, why even
show up at all? Why go through the trouble of building these picture-perfect
clones just to get destroyed in five seconds anyway? Why not just
let the Autobots sit and wonder where the Decepticons are, while they're
attacking the real base, as they do within moments of the fake attack anyway?
Quite a waste of time and energy for robots low on both!
-
Megatron tells Soundwave, "We're going home...OUR home!" Is there
another kind of home? Sure, stressing it that way makes it more poignant
for us Earth-folk, but why would Megatron say it like that to Soundwave?
-
Near the end of the episode, Optimus Prime takes a full frontal blast from
the Decepticon ship, then crashes forcefully onto solid rock. He
stands up, dusts himself off, and asks, "Where's Mirage?" Is this
even slightly reasonable? Wouldn't his mind be on other things? (The
answer is yes it would, by the way)
CHANGED PREMISES
-
When the Decepticons first build the Imposso-base (see "part
2"), it's out in an open stretch of land in the desert. In this
episode, however, it's suddenly inside a mountain. When did this
happen? And why waste the energy to move it into a mountain?
-
I don't know that this is really a changed premise, but this marks the
only episode in which Ravage speaks.
ANIMATION FLUBS
-
As the Autobots cheer on Optimus Prime's attempt to transform, Huffer mouths
Cliffjumper's "Come on!" and Optimus's grunts.
-
When Ironhide takes off after the Decepticons in the air, the gun mounted
on his back appears, then quickly disappears, then is back, then disappears
again.
-
Optimus Prime tells Ironhide there's a fine line between "Being
a hero, and being a memory." This again is stressed wrong (fortunately
they got better at this). Prime meant to stress the word "hero."
-
As Hound taunts Ravage by twirling the key to his cell, the key ring itself
stays perfectly still on his finger, while just the key spins around the
ring. That's quite a trick!
-
Hound mouths Mirage's line, "Ravage...he escaped."
-
When Optimus Prime says that Ravage's escape was "perfect," the Autobots
all open their mouths in shock. Granted, at this point we don't know
that they allowed Ravage to escape on purpose, but they certainly do!
-
When the Autobots transform to roll into battle, Spike gets into Hound
on the passenger side. Moments earlier he was on the driver's side.
Granted, there is plenty of time for him to circle around to the passenger
side, but why would he?
-
During this heroic scene, Ironhide steps forward with what looks like several
bullet holes across his chest. Setting aside the fact that he was
only hit once in the back, seconds later when he transforms,
they're gone.
-
After the volunteers have all stepped forward, Jazz transforms. His
transforming sound ends well before he's done transforming.
-
When the Decepticons cheer their victory with Megatron by throwing their
hands in the air, Soundwave's hand goes up at a peculiar angle, as if his
body were oriented the other way.
-
As the Decepticons head for the rocket, several of them flash in color
from light blue to dark blue.
-
When Hound fights Rumble (what a wimp! He can't even take on Rumble?!?
He's half Hound's size!), he says, "I owe you one from Sherman Dam!" and
bubbles float up in front of him. Not one or two either, there's
a LOT! Clearly this bit of animation was meant to be used in the
underwater scene.
-
Even though Prowl runs over Starscream's gun, he gets it back in short
order.
-
Mirage is CLEARLY seen firing on the Decepticon ship as it takes off (see
the picture above). How can he possibly show up on it later?
I guess the real question here is, only three Autobots step into frame
and fire on the Decepticon ship. With all the characters, why did
the creators put Mirage in such an obvious position?
-
When Sideswipe says "My rocket pack?" his rocket pack suddenly has wings.
More disturbing is that it's upside down (the rockets are by Sideswipe's
shoulders)! Let's hope he doesn't try to take off!
-
When Sideswipe gives his mysterious pack to Prime, it doubles in size to
fit Prime.
-
During the crash sequence, Megatron's fusion cannon disappears from his
arm for one quick scene.
-
Not really a mistake, I guess, but the Autobots start and stop cheering
rather abruptly both when the Decepticon ship crashes, and when they discover
Mirage saved the day. It really sounds funny.
-
Frank Welker's strange Galvatron-like voice appears again at the end to
say, "Mirage, you did it, you stopped the Decepticons!"
-
Spike has a very unusual journal indeed. First of all, as he moves
his hand over to start a new line, each previous line disappears.
Then, as his hand moves back to the right, the lines reappear (oooh, spooky!).
Plus, he turns a page to keep writing, and the back of the page he was
just writing on has writing on it! What is going on with this thing?
CORRECTIONS
-
Various people wonder how Hound could have gotten close enough to Megatron
to capture a hologram of him. Why does he need to get close?
Hound knows what Megatron looks like, he doesn't need to "take a picture"
of him or anything! He makes a human in "part 2," as well as a rocket
base without ever "capturing these images" either!
Well, in a surprise turn of events, good defeated evil and peace and order
are restored to the world. However, there's still many, many more
episodes to go, so don't expect to see an end in sight. Next stop..."Transport
to Oblivion!"
