More Than Meets the Eye, part 2

Yes friends, another installment in this highly popular series of mistake-finding
fun. And when I say "highly popular," what I mean is "I enjoy doing
it, so who cares what you think." Picking up from where we left off
last time...
PLOT SUMMARY
The Autobots save and befriend two humans named Spike and Sparkplug.
Megatron continues his energy-stealing, while at the same time building
a spaceship to return to Cybertron. He attacks a dam, creating a
tidal wave, then he attacks the Ruby Crystal mines of Burma. The
Autobots devise a plan to cave in the mines, trapping Megatron. Unfortunately,
Bumblebee, Sparkplug, and Optimus Prime all get caught in the blast.
GREAT LINES
"Great, you're in the right place!" Brawn, after Huffer explains that the
only things he hates are fire and water, while trapped in the burning ocean.
GREAT SCENES
When the Autobots are attacking the Decepticons at Sherman Dam, there is
an incredibly cool scene in which they take to the air, scrambling different
directions as the camera tracks with them. Beautifully animated stuff.
PLOT PROBLEMS
-
One of the cliffhangers at the end of part 1 was the fact that Optimus
Prime couldn't lift the heavy rig to save the humans. Of course,
with the start of this episode, he can not only lift it, but toss it!
-
Hooray! The Autobots saved the humans! Well, two of the humans
anyway. We never know what happened to the rest of the oil rig crew.
Oh well, Spike and Sparkplug are safe, anyway, piss on the rest, I guess.
-
Spike finds Soundwave in the desert as a cassette deck and runs with him
into the Autobot base, then set him down onto Teletran I. Why?
I understand it helps the scene along, but why not throw the cassette deck
into his backpack? Why stop running and put it down in a nonsensical
place?
-
When asking the Autobots why they transform, Trailbreaker says, "Simple--disguise!"
Sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense at all. On Cybertron, the
inhabitants don't ride in vehicles, they are the vehicles!
So, to "disguise" yourself as a vehicle only makes it OBVIOUS
that you're an Autobot or Decepticon! If they really wanted to disguise
themselves, they'd have to become buildings, or the strange communication
device Soundwave was. We can see another one on the road as well,
so that's truly a disguise. But to become a vehicle?
That just draws attention to yourself!
-
Megatron says they'll attack the dam at sunrise. Why? Why not
go under the cover of darkness? They don't need the sun
to see, do they? If so, it certainly looks bright enough right then,
why not go then? What, do they need to sleep?
-
While heading for the dam, Optimus Prime tells the Autobots as dramatically
as possible to ACCELERATE! Once again, I ask why they're not already
accelerating? And for that matter, why not fly? It has
to be quicker!
-
When the Autobots arrive at the dam, Megatron comes out and taunts them.
Pray tell, how did he know they were there?
-
Hound goes underwater to stop Rumble. Before going, he drops down
a face shield. I cannot for the life of me come up with a reason
for this action. Any explanation anyone can offer is moot,
in fact, because Rumble doesn't have one.
-
At the Dam, Megatron has Optimus hanging by his hands from a catwalk, and
then he starts to step on Optimus Primes hands, as if to make him fall.
I hate to point this it, but Prime can FLY!!!!! Who cares
if he falls?
-
How in the world does Spike move all those huge, heavy boulders off of
Hound?
-
It is not in any way, shape, or form believable that the Decepticons could
build their space cruiser and elaborate base from Earth materials.
-
Spike, Sparkplug, and Trailbreaker, being tailed by two Decepticons, radio
"home base" for help. Fortunately for them, it arrives in three
seconds!
-
If these Burma crystal mines are so fantastic and shimmering and beautiful
and energy-rich, why do the humans actually want to blow them up?!?
-
The entire ending deserves some scrutiny. Optimus Prime admits from
the start he's going to send Roller in, so why drive up the mountain at
all? Just send him from right there. Also, why does Optimus
give them the time limit of five minutes? The bomb was set to go
off in one. Finally, why does he dramatically tell the other Autobots
to come get him when he only drives about twenty feet away, and is in full,
plain sight?!?
CHANGED PREMISES
-
Wheeljack suddenly goes from having what would normally called a New York
accent to having a southern accent in this episode.
-
The energon cubes switch in this episode from needing to be turned into
energon through compression to simply being energon cubes. It stays
this way for the rest of the series (though the color changes a little
here and there).
-
Starscream's null ray has a different sound in this episode, and works
differently from before. Before it actually froze--as in with ice--
the turbines, whereas here (and every time after) it simply stops them
from moving.
-
Jazz's hand no longer glows when turning into a grapple hook.
ANIMATION FLUBS
-
After Brawn frees him, Huffer says thanks and then, "Let's take off!"
Unfortunately, Brawn mouths those words.
-
After the battle, Ratchet is repairing the wrong arm of Huffer (you can
see in the picture above that his right arm is injured, but Ratchet
repairs the left arm).
-
Soundwave says for Ravage to enter "Teltran One" instead of "Teletran
One." It's a small point, but Frank Welker, voice of Soundwave and
many others, always says "headkorters" instead of "headquarters
as well.
-
Again with some more Frank Welker fun: when Ravage escapes, some Autobots
chase him. During the ensuing chase, we distinctly hear Frank Welker
deliver the lines: "Fire!" and "Can't see him!" Unfortunately, it's
not a voice that matches any Autobot or Decepticon (except for maybe
Galvatron).
-
At the dam, Prowl mouths Optimus Prime's line, "We've got to work quickly."
-
This one is great: After Megatron psychically taunts the Autobots
at the dam, Optimus Prime yells, "Autobots, to the AIR!" and they all take
off from the river bank. Next we see Hound go after Rumble, then
Ironhide and Bumblebee carve a new river. We cut back to the Autobots,
and they're back on the river bank, and Optimus Prime this time
says, "Autobots, to the power plant," and they take off again.
-
During the battle at the dam, Rumble is seen a few times, even though he's
supposed to be underwater. Then again, maybe it's just one of the
many phantom Rumbles that keep turning up.
-
Huffer whines to Optimus Prime about not being good fighters at one point,
but oddly enough Optimus is standing behind Huffer and to his left,
yet Huffer just looks blankly straight ahead.
-
While Megatron and Soundwave go down the elevator in their impossible base,
the three Reflector robots keep stacking energon cubes on top of one another.
Strangely enough, their piles never get any bigger.
-
Soundwave's strike force includes many, many more jets, Reflectors, and
Rumbles than were ever there before.
-
Sunstreaker and Sideswipe first approach Trailbreaker with Sideswipe on
his passenger's side. Then the overhead angle shoes Sideswipe instantly
on Trailbreaker's driver's side. Then the angle switches to a head-on
view and Sideswipe has returned to the passenger's side.
-
Naturally, as with any show with a running timer, the time is never consistent
between when we cut away and cut back, most noticeable between within the
last ten seconds (they seem to go by at the same rate as the first fifty).
CORRECTIONS
-
This time, let's briefly talk a bit about "subspace." Lots of people
have this crazy theory about there being a subspace, and that's where Prime's
trailer disappears to, and that's how the Autobots and Decepticons change
size, and so forth. It sounds reasonable enough, but then you get
some idiots who try to point out how impossible it is to shrink your size
because your molecules have no place to go, or even still your mass would
be the same, and so forth. To these people I say this: get
a life! Seriously now, again I ask how you can accept a flying,
speaking, transforming, feeling robot, but not accept that they can shrink.
They just can! It's pretty obvious that they're beyond our knowledge
and understanding of things, so it's also obvious that they can do things
that our science cannot explain. End of story. This makes it
totally believable when, for example, Spike is able to pick up Soundwave.
Soundwave just made himself lighter. He can do it, there is no explanation
for it, he can just do it. Get it? Got it? Good.
-
Some claim this is the only appearance of the repair center outside of
the Autobot headquarters. It goes without saying that these people
are wrong once again. While it does tend to come and go as the story
dictates, strictly from memory I can recall it showing up in The Ultimate
Doom, as well as others.
-
Some wonder why the Decepticons would even need any more strikes if the
Ruby Crystals are powerful enough to power the whole planet of Cybertron.
Really, people, there are answers, you just need to LISTEN FOR
THEM!!! Megatron extremely clearly points out
that he needs the other strikes to have enough energy to build the ultimate
weapon and conquer the universe. Simply powering up Cybertron isn't
enough...he needs enough energy to launch an attack on the universe.
That's quite an undertaking and certainly would require a LOT of energy.
So please, pay attention and maybe you'll do better next time.
Again, thanks for reading. I realize that after not one but two of
these things you're probably thinking I'm insane. You're right, I
am. Let's face it though, the show was damn cool. "More Than
Meets the Eye, Part Three" is next, and I for one can't wait to
see how it turns out!
